High road toll mars Easter holiday
PA Wellington The Easter road toll climbed to at least 13 yesterday, the same as for the whole holiday last year.
The Ministry of Transport reported six deaths on Saturday, including that of a Christchurch man, and one in the early hours of Sunday adding to the four who died on Thursday and the two on Friday. At the corresponding time last Easter the road toll was nine.
The most recent death was yesterday at Waitomo when a motor-cycle hit a power pole, killing the pillion passenger. He was Tony Lindsay Brick, aged 18, of Henderson.
A motor-cyclist died on Saturday evening after his machine and a car that he was trying to overtake collided on the road between Corsair Bay and Lyttelton. He was
Michael John Maffey, aged 27, of Maunsell Street, Woolston.
The accident happened about 4.30 p.m. as Mr Maffey was travelling to Lyttelton, said a spokesman for the police in Christchurch.
Mr Maffey was thrown to the road after his motorcycle and a car he was trying to overtake collided. He was fatally injured after being run over by the car, said the spokesman.
The car and another vehicle which was travelling- to Corsair Bay then collided. The drivers of both vehicles suffered minor injuries.
Another pillion passenger
was killed when a motorcycle collided with a car in Whakatane on Saturday. She was Pamela Joy Adams, aged 15, of Whakatane. In other accidents on Saturday a cyclist died after colliding with a car on Highway one at Lichfield, near Putaruru. He was Johan Plessius, aged 16, of Lichfield. A Christchurch man was killed when his car hit a power pole at Seddon. He was Richard James McGlory, aged 19. Two people died on Saturday from injuries suffered in accidents on Thursday. They were Carol Lee Periett, aged 27, of Hutt Valley, who had fallen from a car in Porirua, and Colin James Young, aged 46, who had been struck by a car at Pohuehue near Warkworth. Since the official holiday period began at 4 p.m. on Thursday, other fatal accidents have occurred in Hastings, Foxton, Southland, Otahuhu, and Warkworth. The first was in Hastings on Thursday when a man was killed when the car in which he was a passenger hit a power pole. He was Derek Jonathon Reihana, of Hamilton.
On the same day two passengers in a car which hit a tree after it left the
road south of Foxton died. They were James Himiona Hiraka, aged 37, and Lorena Temahora Hiraka, aged 11, both of Lower Hutt. A man was killed when the car he was in hit a concrete fence post at Otautau in Southland. He was Jeffrey Francis McAlister, aged 19. On Friday an unidentified man, aged about 45, died after he was struck by a car on Auckland’s southern motorway. A Warkworth woman died when her car hit a bridge about 3km from the town. She was Maria Dawson, aged 28.
