Big test for United
Christchurch Brother United must beat Wellington Diamond United in Wellington today if it is to reach the final of the Air New Zealand Cup soccer competition.
United’s 1-4 loss to McKee Nelson United on Saturday, and Nelson’s subsequent 2-1 victory over Dunedin City yesterday, has left Nelson two points ahead. If United can beat the formidable W.D.U. it will win the group for although a 1-0 win would give it the same goal difference as Nelson, the rules state that the team which has scored more goals will advance. Nelson put the acid on United with its win yester-
day. Mark Smith volleyed the first goal early in the match, but Dunedin equalised three minutes later through Nigel Fisher. Charlie Juffs scored the winner five minutes from the end.
Napier City Rovers picked up its second win of the competition, beating National Mutual Miramar, 4-3. Terry Emms and Harry Clarke scored twice each for Napier, while Mick Howard contributed two for Miramar and Stuart Jacobs scored once.
Gisborne City made sure of its place in next weekend’s final by beating Papatoetoe, 2-0 yesterday. John Hill scored the first and Ken Cresswell the second
towards the end. A draw would have been enough to get Papatoetoe through. Mount Wellington produced its best performance in the Cup competition by walloping Manurewa, 4-0, while University Cowan and Hanimex-North Shore drew, 2-2.
