Soccer boost for country area
Soccer’s place as one of New Zealand’s most popular winter sports among youngsters received further cementing recently with the formation of a Banks Peninsula club.
The club’s headquarters are at Duvauchelle Domain, and even the most enthusiastic among the organisers have been surprised at the success of the endeavour, in a mainly rugby-orientated area.
Senior practices have been held for the past month, with an increasing number of players turning up each week. Not only is a team entered in the Canterbury Football Association’s lower divisions, but there are also teams in the Canterbury Junior Football Association’s tenth and thirteenth grades. The club draws its players from the inner Akaroa harbour and the eastern bays. Le Bons Bay alone has 10 boys playing. For home games this can mean up to 25km travel for home games and as much as two hours each way for patches in ChristchurtW,
