Junior golf team fails in Melbourne

NZPA staff correspondent Sydney New Zealand's junior golfers managed only to draw their last-round game with Tasmania and finished sixth of the seven teams in the Shell Australia interstate golf tournament in Melbourne on Saturday. New Zealand had to beat the lowly ranked Tasmanians to have a better aggregate than South Australia and grab fourth place, but the best they could manage was wins by the hero of the New Zealand side. Glen Goldfinch, and fellow Aucklander Geoff Stephens, while the team captain, Darryl Court, halved his game. The result in the matchplay tournament left New Zealand with a fortuitous first-day win over New South Wales, who had a game taken from them on a technicality, two halved matches and three losses. The tournament was won by Western Australia. The team manager, Neil Woodbury, was unhappy

with the final table: "I’m disappointed because I felt we played better than that. "We’re looking forward to the individual tournament (which starts today)." he said.

"The Australian coaches have all been impressed with the calibre of the New Zealand golfers and we’ll be in a good position for next year because four of this year’s team. Stephens. Court. Craig Perks, and Paul Cadogan, will all be still available.

"Goldfinch is going to a United States university on a golf scholarship and Lloyd Gilmore will be over-age’" Mr Woodbury said that New Zealand had a good record in the two-day stroke-play competition which opens today, having won the under-21 title three of the four times it has been contested, and the teams trophy every time. Ninety golfers, including the players they met in the inter-state match-play competition, will be competing in the two-day event.
