Heavy loss for Chch United
Christchurch Brother United suffered its first significant loss of the 1984 soccer season on Saturday when it was well beaten, 41, by McKee Nelson United in an Air New Zealand Cup match at Nelson. Having begun impressively, Christchurch United should have gone behind midway through the first half when the Nelson striker, Mark Smith, was brought down in the penalty area. However, the Nel son captain, Paul McLean, made a hash of the spot kick and pushed it wide. There was no score at the interval, but Nelson went ahead soon after when McLean made up for his earlier error by finishing off some good work by Nelson’s new mid-fielder, Kenny
Drakeford. McLean added a second and Nelson put a fightback out of the question with its third goal midway through the half. United’s goalkeeper, Steve Baker, dropped the ball and John Slotemaker was handily placed to score. Paul Brydon added Nelson’s fourth, against the run of play towards the end, again after Drakeford had made ground on the right. But United regained some face with Keith Braithwaite pulling a goal back just before the finish. Women’s soccer Nomads beat D.B. Imperial, 1-0, in the final of the women’s soccer six-a-side tournament at Burnside Park yesterday.
