Bicycle lighting

Sir,—Having read the letters by Dennis Wilkinson and Frank Finnigan (April 19) I, as a cyclist, would like to give my views. I ride a cycle from Papanui, via the Main North Road, to Belfast daily. It is like riding an obstacle course. Tyres are damaged and punctured from glass left at intersections after accidents. If motorists would obey give-way signs and use indicators when turning, this would be a great help. We cyclists are not mind readers. If motorists who do not garage their vehicles would bother to wipe all windows, especially on winter mornings, they would be able to see a cyclist approaching. Many times I have had to stop to avoid collision because a driver’s windows are too fogged up to see me. The problem of is far from one-sided. If your correspondents rode cycles from St Andrew’s College to Belfast they would understand what I mean.—Yours, etc., DAVID E. CRUTHERS. April 21, 1984.
