Rare book sold
A manuscript written in Arabic and believed to be the earliest book on hunting has . been sold for £31,900 (aboutWOO) at a Sotheby’s ’ auction in London. As a manuscript copy of a lost text dated 1223 it begins with an account of how the Byzan- „ tine emperor sent a book on - hawking to the Abbasid; Caliph al-Mahdi (775-785 - AD.), who then ordered his court falconer, Adham ibn Muhriz Albahili to collate all known writings on the sub-" ject The result was a defini-" five book covering birds of prey, hawking and the art of • hunting with hounds and cheetahs, which had an estimated value of up to £35,000 ($77,000) before it - was bought by a London dealer at the auction of oriental manuscripts and miniatures.—London.
