Strike called off

PA Wellington The Prime Minister's intervention has led to the New Zealand Harbour Board Workers' Union calling off a planned 48-hour strike on Thursday and Friday next week. The strike was planned over differences of opinion between the union and the Harbours' Association on superannuation. The association’s executive director, Mr Joe Murray, said yesterday he had been advised by the Prime Minister’s office that Sir Robert Muldoon wanted to meet interested parties in the dispute on May 26. the day the strike was to start. One reason for the strike was failure by the association to meet an alleged commitment with the union to approach the Prime Minister if the National Provident Fund did not agree to invest about 50 per cent of the superannuation money in the outside market.
