Warning on sulphites
NZPA staff correspondent Washington Between five and 10 per cent of asthmatics are allergic to sulphites, according to a study in the United States. Sulphites are chemicals used to prevent vegetables and fruit turning brown. They are also added to many wines and clear liquid medicines. The researchers say the allergy rate is much higher than previously thought, and the Food and Drug Administration recommended recently that state health agencies require restaurants to inform customers if sulphites are being used.
