Aust, adopts colours
NZPA-AAP Canberra Australia’s national colours would be green and gold, as reflected on Medicare cards distributed to millions of Australian, the Federal Government announced yesterday. The Prime Minister, Mr Bob Hawke said that the Governor-General, Sir Ninian Stephen, had proclaimed yesterday that the official sporting colours would be the national colours to be flown on all occasions when such colours were customarily used. The Governor-General also had approved a proclamation that “Advance Australia Fair” was now Australia’s national anthem. “God Save the Queen,” will be known as Australia’s Royal Anthem, and used only in the presence of the Queen or a member of the Royal Family in Australia on an official visit. The Vice-Regal salute now consists of the first four bars and the last four bars of “Advance Australia Fair.” Mr Hawke said that the use of green and gold for Australia’s international sporting teams had gone back many years and had been Australia’s Olympic team colours since the 19205.
