Minister to visit Saudi Arabia
Parliamentary reporter The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Cooper, will include a visit to Saudi Arabia on his return next month from Europe, where he will be pressing for long-term access for New Zealand butter. The visit to Saudi Arabia follows an invitation by the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Saud al-Faisal, and a recent visit by Saudi representatives to New Zealand. New Zealand has also recently opened a new post in Saudi Arabia.
The visit is seen as a chance to consolidate relations with a trading partner, which has become more significant at the same time
that access for New Zealand products to Europe has declined. “Saudi Arabia plays a prominent role in the affairs of the Middle East and I regard the opportunity to consult with Prince Saud as a most valuable one,” said Mr Cooper. Mr Cooper will also call on other Saudi Ministers. He said that New Zealand’s relationship with Saudi Arabia was expanding in a number of fields, and the recent establishment of a resident mission in Jeddah was clear evidence of this. Arrangements are also being finalised for the Minister to pay a brief visit to Bahrain and other Gulf states.
