Police raid Timaru gangs’ headquarters
PA Timaru Police in riot gear raided a gang headquarters yesterday afternoon after a police vehicle was allegedly bombarded with stones. Five people were arrested and loaded weapons seized during the raid at the Road Knights gang house in Timaru. A constable suffered a fractured chest bone after being struck by an object. The raid followed two earlier visits to the gang headquarters and also one to the headquarters of the Devil’s Henchmen gang at Washdyke. Both headquarters were visited on Thursday night
under search warrants relating to arms, drugs and liquor. At the Road Knights house, the police seized a loaded pistol, a loaded sawn-off shotgun, ammunition, cannabis and a large quantity of liquor. The five arrests related to charges of throwing missiles in a manner likely to endanger safety, assault, intentional damage and the possession of cannabis, said Senior-Sergeant D. T. Crowe. Those arrested are likely to appear today in the District Court at Timaru. At the Devil’s Henchmen house the police seized a
loaded .22 rifle, ammunition and a quantity of liquor. Senior-Sergeant Crowe said charges would be laid. He said the police returned to the Road Knights headquarters early yesterday afternoon after a complaint from a motorist. “The police allege that a patrol car was bombarded with rocks. The police withdrew and reinforcements were called in,” Mr Crowe said. The police pulled down part of a fence to gain entry. Constable G. V. K. Smith needed hospital treatment after being struck by an object, but was later discharged.
