Move to bring Samoas closer

NZPA-AAP Apia Eighty-five years after the partition of American Samoa and Western Samoa, discussions have been completed between the two Governments as part of a continuing programme to bring the two countries closer together. Delegations from the two Samoas were headed by American Samoa’s Governor, Mr Peter Coleman, and Western Samoa’s Prime Minister, Tosilau Eti Alesana. Meetings were held in Savaii, the largest island of Western Samoa. Topics discussed included

the sharing of medical skills, the existing inadequacies of telephone communication, harbour development, tourism and promotional activities, and the improvement of trade between the two countries. Because of the critical shortage of land in American Samoa, which is about one-fifteenth the size of Western Samoa, the American Samoan delegation requested Western 'Samoan land be made avaialble to them for agricultural projects. Further discussions to improve inter-Samoa contact will be held in mid-Septem-ber.
