Brazilian floods
About 25,000 people have been left homeless by flooding in the normally droughtstricken north-east of Brazil. Floodwaters from recent heavy rains swept away shacks in Teresina, the capital of Piaui state, and caused damage in other Piaui towns and the nearby state of Maranhao. The return of rain to the region late last month brought an end to a five-year drought which had brought millions of inhabitants of the arid interior to the brink of starvation.—Rio de Janeiro.
