‘Our Mary’ All true Kiwis will take pride in the achievements of the rising star of crosscountry and marathon running, Mary O’Connor, now claimed by Canterbury but in actual fact a West Coaster born and bred. For many years Mary’s parents have been prominent in the farming and community life of the fertile Kokatahi Valley, where Mary was born and completed her primary schooling, later to complete the first phase of her secondary education at St Mary’s and the Westland District High School in Hokitika, before moving on to the University of Canterbury. Mary’s antecedents have had their roots deep in Westland’s soil, , following closely the first pakeha invasion of the Coast. Fame sits easily on Mary’s diminutive frame, and, like Alexander the Great, she might soon be sighing that there are no more worlds to conquer.
MARK WALLACE,
