Blitz on drinking drivers tonight
Operation Checkpoint will mount its biggest effort against Christchurch drink-ing-drivers this evening.
About 12 extra traffic officers were called in for the blitz on Thursday and Traffic Senior-Sergeant Russell Dellow warned that more would be on duty in the city this evening. Officers stopped 137 vehicles at 10 city checkpoints near hotels and other licensed premises on Thursday. Five drivers were given breath screening tests and two evidential tests.
“It would represent more or less a normal night,” he said.
In addition to routine patrols, other checkpoints were set up in Waimairi District and rural areas. The Easter campaign, a follow-up to the Christmas blitz, will continue in Christchurch until Friday. No checkpoints were mounted last evening.
