Anorexia and bulimia
Sir, — “The Press” of April 17 printed a report from Washington that the incidence of anorexia and bulimia has reached the stage of a true epidemic in the United States. Three causes were mentioned. We would also point out other causes — calendar girls, centrefold pinups, beauty contests, wolf whistles, portraying young women’s bodies in advertising and a bombardment of attitudes that evaluate women according to their appearance. Image consciousness, including weight phobia, is the inevitable result. In New Zealand there has been an alarming increase in the incidence of anorexia and bulimia in recent years. It is imperative that we change our attitudes before our figures also reach epidemic level. The Clerical Workers’ Union has made a start, and we wholeheartedly support them. — Yours, etc LOUISE TABRUM, LOLUAMA AVIA, JENNY GIBBS, LEITH GRAYDON, MARGARET SAUL.
