Bicycle lighting
Sir, — In response to a recent editorial, and to correspondence, I reiterate that the Canterbury Cyclists’ Association has been trying for at least the last five years, to have a New Zealand standard for bicycle lights. The association has had meetings with the Ministry of Transport head office and other organisations such as the Automobile Association, Canterbury, the Standards Institute and the Consumers’ Institute. It has corresponded with various Ministers of Transport, and regularly brought up remits through the local Metropolitan Road Safety Committee. Personally, I am almost beginning to believe that there is a conspiracy against taking any action on cycle lighting, so that other road users can justifiably criticise that “cyclists never use lights” and use this as an excuse to ignore any other demands that cyclists may make for improved conditions. — Yours, etc., TIM KERR.
