East German woman flees to Pakistan
NZPA-Reuter Islamabad An East German woman studying in Afghanistan has fled to Pakistan with the help of Afghan guerrillas and hopes to seek asylum in West Germany, an Afghan refugee agency reports. Kerstin Beck, aged 24, originally from Munchen Bernsdorf in the Gira province, was one of seven students from (East) Berlin University who came last year to study at the faculty of languages and literature at Kabul University, according to the Afghan Information and Documentation Centre (A.1.D.C.).
A.1.D.C., which is one of several news services run by Afghan refugees living in Pakistan, said Miss Beck joined the ranks of Afghan Mujahideen (Islamic fighters) and arrived in Pakistan with them in the second week of March. She said she had got in touch with the Mujahideen through their supporters among the students of Kabul University. A.I.D.C. quoted Miss Beck as saying in an interview that she hated communism and had long wanted to seek political asylum in West Germany.
