Welfare staff increases
PA Wellington The Government had approved 38 more staff for Social Welfare Department institutions, the Minister of Social Welfare, Mr Young, has said. The need for extra residential social workers was emphasised in a report 18 months ago by Archbishop Johnston, Mr Young said. All but one of the new positions will be for residential social workers at Owairaka Boys’, Christchurch Boys’, Wesleydale Boys’, Hamilton Girls’, Hamilton Boys’, Epuni Boys’, Bollard Girls’, Kohitere Boys’, and Hokio Boys’ homes. The extra appointments were recognition of the need always to have qualified and experienced staff on hand. “I am sure this will ease the pressures on these institutions which are performing essential services for a group of young people who need every ounce of assistance and support they can get,” Mr Young
