German migrants
East German authorities have allowed 17,233 East Germans to migrate to West Germany this year, the Hesse state Social Affairs Minister, Mr Armin Clauss, has said. Mr Clauss told the state Parliament that the flood of migrants, nearly 15,000 of whom had been received at the Giessen resettlement camp, started in earnest on February 18. The Bavarian ministerPresident, Franz Josef Strauss, who helped raise a $4OO million credit for East Germany from Bonn, has claimed much of the responsibility for the Communist policy switch.— Wiesbaden.
