Race rivals well matched

By J. J. BOYLE Hide the Loot and You Rang Sir, rival candidates for the Plough Hotel Handicap at Rangiora today, sprinted fast in training at Riccarton on Saturday. They were paired for 800 m on the No. 1 grass, and finished their trial on terms in 47.65. There was also little between these youngsters when they met in the race for two-year-olds at the Otago meeting on March 31; Hide the Loot finished third and You Rang Sir a promising first-up fourth. Now that Black Arrow is to bypass today’s race Hide the Loot and You Rang Sir might both reach the money. Black Arrow was paired with three unraced stablemates to run out of the 1000 m chute on the course proper on Saturday and cut out his last 600 m in 395. He is one of the early favourites for the Champagne Stakes at Riccarton next week. ' There was a heavy fog over the course when several North Canterbury candidates did their set pieces at Riccarton on Saturday. But the fog cleared in time

to put Clansman, Harbor Flo and others on view with satisfactory efforts. Clansman ran 1400 m on the plough in 1:32.3, the last 600 m in 39.45. Harbor Flo was going keenly on the outside of Pamdora and Amy Annie ending 1400 m in 1:35.6, the last 600 m in 395. It was a leisurely affair for the first 200 m or so, but the merit of the trial was in Harbor Flo’s efficentlooking work rate at the end. Hint, favourite for the Inglewood Stakes, galloped in the fog, but Buffy Beaufort was on view later, and sprinted 800 m with Our Rob on the No. 1 grass in 48.85. Lucifer Lad, a form runner for the Limerick Lodge Handicap today, led Super Comet through 1400 m on the plough in 1:31.8s, the last 600 m in 39.15. Lucifer Lad takes time to wind up in his races, and his trainer Bevan Laming, would have welcomed a wider barrier draw for the four-year-old in the third leg of today’s T.A.B. treble. Sea Poppy showed characteristic brilliance to reel off 800 m on the grass in 46.25.
