Fewer boating mishaps

Fewer boating mishaps on Lyttelton Harbour this season were due to a decrease in the number of boats on the water rather than improved boating behaviour, according to the president of the Canterbury volunteer Coast Guard Service, Mr Graeme Stewart. Incidents involving the coast ;uard were significantly less his season compared with last year, Mr Stewart said. Poor summer weather, combined with the economic climate, had resulted in fewer boats on the harbour. Mr Stewart said that it would be satisfying to find that the reduction in incidents was due to small-boat owners being better educated, prepared, and informed. The reduction however, was most likely because fewer boats were on the water. Most week-ends it had been possible to observe boating behaviour that blatantly disregarded common sense, he said. Mr Stewart said that as it was part of the coast guard’s responsibility to promote water safety, it intended to hold boating safety courses for the public during the winter. “One hopes the response is good and that next season any reduction in incidents can be attributed to better behaviour. At its last meeting, the service adopted a recommendation from its management committee to award life membership to Mr Harold Mason. Mr Bob Lindsay is the only other member of the service who has been honoured with a life membership. Mr Stewart also reported a donation of $1256 from the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club to assist with the purchase of a purpose built rescue boat for Lyttelton. The donation was raised by the club from its survival and safety seminar held at the Christchurch Town Hall last November. ARRIVALS Saturday Elizabeth Berg (6.14 a.m.), 6116, Auckland (Scales).
