Cruise opposition up—poll

NZPA-AFP London More than half the British population did not want American cruise missiles to be based in Britain, according to a Gallup poll published yesterday. The poll, commissioned by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, showed that 53 per cent of British people disapproved

of the installation of the missiles in England, compared with 50 per cent last year. The poll also showed that the number of people who wanted existing United States bases in Britain to remain had fallen from 57 to 49 per cent since last year. Sixty-five per cent of those questioned said that

they did not trust the United States Government to consult the British authorities before using nuclear missiles based in Britain. This view was echoed in a book published yesterday by a journalist, Duncan Campbell, entitled: “The Unsinkable Aircraft Carrier,” which said that Britain did not have dual control of the missiles.
