Hydroponics win award

Almost 3500 horticulturalists. and . home gardeners from throughout the South Island visited the South Island Horticultural Trade Fair at Canterbury Court this week. The two-day fair attracted 45 trade exhibits, ranging from farm machinery to the latest in production techniques. The award for the most

innovative product of the show went to the hydroponic system produced by Growool Hydroponic System, Ltd. The system, introduced on the New Zealand market two months ago, uses rock wool as its medium. The rock wool is formed by heating rock to 1600 deg. C, spinning it to remove the silicon, and a

cellulose binding agent. The technical director of Growool, Mr Hugh Frith, said that the rock wool was an ideal medium for hydroponic systems because it was 100 per cent sterile, retained 17 per cent air even when fully saturated, had no nutrient binding capacity, and 96 per cent of its water was available to the plant.
