Old cottage restored

Years of hard work have ended with the restoration of the 122-year-old “Curragh” cottage at Ferrymead Historic Park. Today is the official opening day for the cottage, which was worked on by the Friends of Ferrymead. A member of the group, Mrs Natalie Brittenden, said that it had been a hard struggle to restore it.

“We raised money by fair means and foul,” she said. Other people helped with gifts of furniture and their labour. The two-storey wooden building was built in 1862 on the corner of Holly Road and Springfield Road. Its first owner was the first Town Clerk of Christchurch, Mr G. Gordon. Days after the cottage

was shifted to Ferrymead in 1972, the roof collapsed during a storm which badly damaged the building. Seven years later the roof was repaired and work started on the rooms. The last to be restored were the two upstairs bedrooms. An old-style laundry, toilet, and clothesline have also been added outside.
