Barnes declines team boatman spot
PA Auckland David Barnes, the threetimes 470 class world champion who missed nomination for the New Zealand Olympic yachting team, has declined an invitation to act as team boatman at Los Angeles. Mr Ralph Roberts, the manager of the yachting team, said yesterday that Barnes considered that he did not have the right mental approach for the job. “It was a reason I completely disagree with,” said Mr Roberts. “David, in my opinion, was the best man we had for the job.” Gray Gibson, like Barnes a sailmaker, has been added to the team as boatmhn. Gibson was runner-up in
the Flying Dutchman class at the Olympic trials.
