De Jong sits out soccer

NZPA staff correspondent Singapore The young Mt Wellington player, Fred de Jong, was unlikely to play in any but the last couple of matches in the Olympic soccer qualifying series in Singapore, said the coach, Kevin Fallon, yesterday. ■ De Jong cut his knee in training on Tuesday, needing four stitches, after finding “the only stone on the field,” said Fallon. “It was rotten luck for the lad,” he said. “He had a sore ankle when he came over from a

knock he received in New Zealand and I just cannot see him being available for the first part of the tournament.” ~ Fallon said the rest of the team was in good health although the 27deg. heat and high humidity were taking a toll of the players. “We are finding the heat very oppressive,” said Fallon. “The older hands are coping better but some of the younger players are quite distressed.” Papatoetoe’s Billy McClure had lost a stone, said Fallon.
