Containers for storage in woodchip compound

The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s woodchip compound at Sticking Point will be used for the storage of empty containers. The containers will be moved from their present site behind Cashin Quay No. 1 to .enable vessels berthed at the quay to use the area for cargo handling. The area adjacent to the No. 1 berth had been used by the container terminal for storage of overflow containers. The terminal’s manager, Mr W. A. Siddall, said there was a growing demand by vessels using the berth to use the space for their own requirement. Mr Siddall said the woodchip compound had been idle for some time due to a downturn in the export market of the product. The compound has been cleaned and is expected to accommodate about 500 containers. The former site accommodated about 300 containers, Mr Siddall said. The compound’s large perimeer mesh fence will be kept in the advent of woodchip being exported through the port in future.
