Notusho may have edge in Rangiora feature

By

JEFF SCOTT

Notusho, to be ridden by the successful North Island apprentice, Peter Fearon, could prove a dangerous lightweight when he contests the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the North Canterbury Racing Club’s meeting on Monday. Notusho, which performed well in metropolitan company at Trentham in January, winning over 1600 m, will carry only 48.5 kg in the Rangiora Handicap, and although he is stepping up to open company, he could have the edge on most. The Richmond-trained son of Beaufort Sea drops B.skg from the weight he carried into a luckless fourth last Saturday at Rangiora, when the top weight in a lower grade over Monday’s distance of 2080 m. The Riccarton-trained Charles Beaufort, a first-up seventh at the Hororata meeting over 1400 m, indicated he had trained on the right way when winning over that distance at the Motukarara trials at the start of the month. A second form runner by Beaufort Sea in the race, Charles Beaufort, would only need to reproduce the same dash he showed when he won six straight in the spring, to take beating here. Takes time to wind up in some of his races, and might need all the luck going in this field. L. Didham. 3 7001 Anticipate 5 54.0 Last-start win was in weaker Waimate Cup field. Still has to be respected. J. Collett. 4 3813 Julie’s Boy 6 53.5 Three lengths from Anticipate when third in Waimate Cup. This harder. R. Taylor. 5 3111 Top Blend 15 53.5 Plucky front-running performances yielded wins in Hororata Cup and corresponding race at Rangier? last week. Lacks size, but capable of winning again or going close from present place in weights. J. Oakeshott. 6 1076 Charles Beaufort 7 53.0 First try at a middle distance this time up, but has shown to advantage in training. Attractive performer in early-season campaign. C. Pankhurst. 8 6948 Pamdora 4 52.0 Showed nothing in corresponding race on this course last week. Might need roomier track for one of her top runs. J. Dowling. 9 1002 Handsome Heir 11 50.5 Ran Top Blend close last week, and should be better, if anything, for that run. G. Davison. 10 6154 Sukerbelle 3 50.0 Battling fourth behind Top Blend last week. Could be improver in this field if track is soft or worse. 11 1944 Notusho 1 48.5 Out of luck in lower grade race last week. Re-

affected track at Riccarton. R. McAra. 2 2622 Alarming 3 55.5 Big run for close second to Retep in corresponding race last Saturday. J. Pankhurst. 6 908 Soaring High 13 54.5 Showed nothing at Waimate, but form should pick up when tracks ease. 7 0275 Spy Force 14 54.0 Only fair run in corresponding race last week. P. Atkinson. 8 6131 Beach Bird 16 53.0 Decisive winner 1400 m at Hororata meeting. This harder, but still respected. C. Johnson. 9 Admiral Blair 9 52.5 Resuming after long absence. No appeal. M.
