Overseas cargo volume drops
Figures given by the Statistics Department this week show overseas cargo handled through New Zealand ports and airports has dropped for the first two months of the year. Provisional figures for the months of January and February show 1,309,009 tonnes of. cargo was exported with a value of $1407 million. This represents a decrease of 6 per cent on last year’s figures for the same period. Inward tonnage showed an even greater drop, with 1,069,000 tonnes handled, compared with 1,324,000 tonnes for 1983, a decrease of almost 20 per cent The Port of Lyttelton exported 126,000 tonnes of cargo for the two months valued at $lOl million and imported 80,000 tonnes worth about $94 million. i Auckland topped the list handling 484,000 tonnes of cargo. Forest products accounted for a large percentage of exafar 1983. Logs, sawn r, and pulp represented almost 23 per cent of the total export for the year. The Statistics Department noted that trade in these products was of considerable importance to regional ports such as Tauranga, Napier, Nelson, Otago, and Bluff.
