Damages claim in Wellington
The former Secretary for Justice, Mr J. F. Robertson, and the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon, can file their defences in a claim for defamation against them, in Wellington, Mr Justice Roper has ruled in a reserved decision given in the High Court. Robert Anthony Consedine, a community worker, and Robin Murray Woodsford, a photographer, are seeking $lO,OOO dairtages against Mr Robertson’and Sir Robert for remarks allegedly made by Sir Robert at a press conference.
His Honour rejected an application by the plaintiffs
to have the action heard in Christchurch and one by the defendants to have the writs set aside. Messrs Consedine and Woodsford allege in their statement of claim that they were defamed while they were on a hunger strike in Addington Prison from July 9 to July 29,1981, as a protest against the South African rugby tour. It is claimed by the plaintiffs that Sir Robert told reporters that the Secretary of Justice said that there had been no loss of weight by the . two men and that they had been suspected of nibbling.
