Busy time for trampolinists

Seven Canterbury trampolinists and one from Nelson had an intensive two days of training with the technical director of the New Zealand Trampoline Association, Mr Darryl Harvey, last week-end. The competitors have all been chosen in the New Zealand team to compete in the world age-group trampoline championships in Tokyo in August.

The competitors are Janelie Kerr, Deborah Bergman and Andrea Stead from the Action club; and Nicholas Donnelly, Kirk Robinson, Suzi Nevell and Michelle Bailey from the Supertramp club. The Nelson competitor was Vaughan Anderson. Four of the group — Kerr, Donnelly, Nevell and Anderson — will attend another training week-end in Auckland during Easter from which an open national team will be selected.

It will compete in the world open championships, also in Tokyo, immediately before the age-group event.

Besides the conventional trampoline, there are sec-

tions for synchronised trampoline and the double mini trampoline. New Zealand will be entered in these two events.

Paula Ashbridge (Auckland) is New Zealand’s leading competitor on the double mini trampoline, and won the Pan Pacific title in Vancouver last year. She was a member of the New Zealand team at the last world championships in 1982 in Bozeman, Montana, and won a bronze medal.

A pleasing feature this year is the number of men vying for positions in the national team. There was one male representative in the 1982 team, but this year New Zealand will be represented in trampoline, double mini trampoline and synchronised trampoline. A coaching course was run in conjunction with the coaching school last weekend, and it doubled the number of qualified coaches in Canterbury. Mr Harvey tested 24 Stage I coaches during the week-end. He will hold an advanced coaching course in Christchurch in September.
