Local government for Christmas Is.

NZPA-AAP Canberra The Australian territory of Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean will get its own form of local government and residents will receive full Government benefits such as health and social security. The Territories and Local Government Minister, Mr Tom Uren, said yesterday that the Government-owned Phosphate Mining Company of Christmas Island would shed many of its non-mining functions. Mr Uren said that the new arrangements would bring the island broadly into line with the rest of Aus-

tralia. Australia was granted sovereignty of the island in 1958, but until now it has been run by the phosphate mining company, which has been responsible for nearly all the administration costs. New Zealand will withdraw its interests in the mining company this year, giving Australia the opportunity to take over its full running. Mr Uren said that details of the new arrangements for the island would be worked out in the next few months in consultation with unions, representatives of the island community, and the mining company.
