SAFETY MEASURE
In sport, winning is always fun, and especially so when it is unexpected. Talking about it can also be very satisfying. Among a group of bowlers from a Christchurch club who attended the national tournament in Dunedin was one who tastes success infrequently. He is a hearty fellow, given to good humour, and when a victory does come his way he has been known to make the most of the occasion.
On the first day of the tournament it was singles being played and each member of the party was on a different green. It turned out to be a very successful day for the aforementioned player, he went through it undefeated. His companions got wind of this and they were a little apprehensive about how talkative he might be when he
joined them in the evening. A meeting place had been arranged and the group paid him little heed when he finally arrived. His flushed face confirmed what they already knew and for a moment or two he was totally ignored.
Then the question was asked as to how his day had gone and for an instant he might have thought he had a rapt audience. But as he opened his mouth to tell all he discovered differently. His friends, in perfect unison, produced from their pockets pieces of cotton-wool which they stuffed into their ears, while with their eyes they encouraged him to say what it was he wanted to relate. Not surprisingly, laughter overtook everyone before long, and some persuasion was finally necessary before the man of the moment was willing to tell his story.
