Pig disease outbreak
An outbreak of Aujesky’s disease has been diagnosed in a Wairarapa piggery. A veterinary officer with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Mr Garth Pannett, said the disease had caused some fatalities, mainly among young piglets aged from six to 12 days. Aujesky’s disease was first detected in New Zealand in 1975. An M.A.F. survey in 1976 indicated that the disease was present at low levels and appeared to have a localised distribu-. tion.
Later this year M.A.F. I 'will begin a survey of the g revalence of the disease in outh Island pig herds. i It is being undertaken by ! M.A.F. in direct response to , a request by the pork indus- ; try and aims to enable the South Island to be declared s free of Aujesky’s disease. The presence of the j disease in New Zealand is t the major impediment to I the export of pigmeat to Australia, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
