Members to finance Jetbet installation
Providing the finance can be found to cover the cost of installing Jetbet equipment before September, Orari Racecourse will continue to be the venue for future meetings of the Geraldine Racing Club.
This decision was made by an almost full muster of members, many of them members of the Geraldine Trotting Club as well, at a special general meeting of the racing club held on Tuesday evening. The cost of installing the
new equipment will be $26,000, of which 60 per cent will have to be provided by the racing club. Mr Peter South, president of the Geraldine Racing Club, said yesterday that because of the club’s present financial situation he had had reservations whether such expenditure was warranted. But he pointed out that he could not see the benefit of the club making a move to either Washdyke or Ashburton, for the support for
racing at Orari was just as strong, if not stronger, than either of those centres. One stipulation with regard to raising the money was that there was to be no borrowing. “The members are obviously prepared to dig deep and provided the necessary’ finance themselves,” said Mr South. “That way there will be no question of loan repayments and, hopefully, stakes will be maintained at their present level.”
