McGinty ready for Stakes
NZPA staff correspondent Sydney
The New Zealand trainer, Colin Jillings, is winning a quiet fight he has been waging all week to get McGinty ready for the $300,000 Tancred Stakes tomorrow.
McGinty was “pricked” in the near-side front hoof while being shod on Monday and Jillings has been applying poultices to draw out any bruising and prevent infection.
On Tuesday he was able to work McGinty over 1600 m with the fellow New Zealander, Stylish Dude, and the pair were timed over 1400 m at Imin 31s.
Jillings has been reluctant to say too much about the injury, other than that he was working to get the gallant One Pound Sterling four-year-old right in time for the Tancred.
Yesterday morning McGinty repaid the trainer’s hours of attention with a good run over 1600 m at Rosehill, and Jillings said later that the horse was a definite starter. “He worked very well,” be said. “There was fog at the track and he was only timed over 1400 m, but he did that in about Imin 275, which was one of the best of the morning. “We’ve still got poultices on the hoof and we’ve still got a couple of days up our sleeve. “But there’s no suggestion that he won’t start. I wouldn’t start him if he wasn’t absolutely right. “I don’t think he’s been better within himself at any part of his career.”
