Another all-the-way win for Roydon Glen?

By

G. K. YULE

Roydon Glen won with such authority in national record time for 2600 m on April 4 that few will be prepared to back against him with confidence when he contests the John Brandon Flying Stakes, the second leg of the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s feature Triple Crown Series.

As in the first leg, Roydon Glen has drawn No. 3 at the barrier in the mobile start 2000 m event at Addington Raceway tomorrow. This is generally regarded as the most favourable draw for this starting point and everything points to Roydon Glen trying for another all-the-way victory.

In the last four weeks he has won the Great Northern Derby, followed by his win on April 4 when he paced the 2600 m in 3min 15.75, close to the national allcomers’ record of 3min 15.4 s shared by the Australian speedster, Steel Jaw, and the great mare, Bonnie’s Chance. Should his expected victory eventuate, Roydon Glen will have won $98,175 in four weeks and be well on the way towards the $20,000 bonus payable to the owner of any horse winning all three legs of the John Brandon Series. Liquid Lightning will have to start from the second line, instead of No. 5, the position he drew when he beat all but Roydon Glen on April 4. Liquid Lightning is a C2 horse and one of the most loosely-assessed in the series. His awkward draw should not prevent him taking a prominent part in the finish once more and he could be the one to trouble the probable favourite. Freigtttman will start from No. 8 now that Crafty Kobba has been scratched. His sixth on April 4 was a respectable effort as he lost ground early and came home in style. He is one of the more consistent performers in his age group and should be a leading contender. Northerners will again support King Alba in spite of his failures at Alexandra Park on March 17 and Addington on April 4. Before those rather dismal showings he had been undefeated in five appearances. He is regarded as a top sprinter and from No. 5 at the barrier, he must be taken into account. Logan Dryham was another big disappointment on the first night of the meeting. He will have to show marked improvement to have much chance and could be pressed to match Slugger, which did so well for fourth over 2600 m. Two other northern challengers in Paleface Tryax and Tucker’s Rule should be the pick of the remainder. Hilarious Guest, in some ways rather unlucky when second behind Norton in the New Brighton Cup, will have a chance to gain an overdue win in the second leg of the double, the Steinlager Handicap. Hands Down has to give the in-fonn mare a start of 20m, an assignment well within his capabilities. He has had a chance to freshen since racing at Cambridge on March 20, after which he returned south and rejoined Derek Jones’s team. Mytop Sweetie, Stortford Lodge, Ben, Direct Kiwi and Dear Sir appeal most of the others, although a big run from Kind Nature will not be a complete surprise.
