Furniture fire tests revised

Wellington reporter

New standards are pending on the testing for fire and smoke of materials used as upholstery in furniture.

The standards are expected to be approved by the Standards Association in the next few weeks.

Two methods of testing will become mandatory — using either a smouldering cigarette or a simulated lighted match, as might be dropped.

This comes after increasing world-wide alarm at the heat and toxic fumes generated by the ignition of foams used in upholstery, particularly polyurethane.
