Diesel fumes

Sir,—l would be interested in comments from the appropriate authorities on the following: (1) What arrangements are there for the testing of emissions from diesel-fuelled vehicles such as city buses, taxis, tour coaches and trucks? (2) What health hazards are there from inhalation of this exhaust when walking or cycling behind these vehicles? (3) What are the effects of this nauseating, black smoke on the environment?— Yours, etc., LEE OSBORN. March 28, 1984.

[Mr D. R. Pullen, regional air pollution control officer of the Department of Health, replies: “The emission of smoke from dieselfuelled vehicles is controlled by the Ministry of Transport by the Traffic Regulations, there being a prohibition of ‘dense’ smoke. Similar powers exist under the Clean Air Act, but this section has not as yet been gazetted. At present there are no facilities available, to measure the emissions of smoke, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, etc. from diesel-fuelled vehicles. It is not possible to list the health and environmental effects of these emissions by way of a short reply. However, should Mr Osborn wish to contact the department the effects could be discussed.”]
