Boy scalded by pie

PA Auckland Gino Hawkins, aged six, was yesterday recovering at home after his legs were badly scalded by a superhot mince pie. The boy bought the pie from his school cafeteria — but it was so hot he dropped the pie, splattering burning mince and gravy over his lower legs. His mother, Mrs Maria Hawkins, said she was shocked when she was telephoned and told that a meat pie had burned her son.

“They telephoned and said there had been an accident ... I thought he might have been knocked over or something,” she said.

The school council held a special meeting on Tuesday evening to discuss the incident. An accident report would be sent to the Auckland Education Board, said the school’s deputy principal. Mrs Hawkins said the school was to set its piewarmer at a lower temperature.
