Overseas bids at auction?

Several overseas buyers are expected to contribute to spirited bidding at a fine art auction in Christchurch today. The auction, organised by McCrostie’s, Ltd; will start at 11 a.m. at the Horticultural Hall, in Cambridge Terrace.

Paintings, furniture, ceramics, and items of jewellery are among the 469 lots to be sold.

A buyer from New York as well as two from Australia were expected to bid at the auction, said the codirector of McCrostie’s, Mr Colin Hart.

An item expected to at-

tract attention was an early Twentieth Century Royal Doulton porcelain vase, painted by the Doulton artist known as Edward John Raby. Mr Hart expected the vase to be sold for up to $4OOO. An oil painting, “The Pink Terraces,” signed and dated in 1886 by the artist, Charles Blomfield, might sell for more than $3OOO, according to Mr Hart.

Other interesting lots include an Abyssinian singleedged sword in a leatherthonged scabbard and a diamond convertible brooch, which can be divided into two sections.
