Plan for Lyttelton road opposed

A Canterbury United Council plan which involves the designation of Lyttelton Borough’s main road as a minor arterial route has been opposed by a Lyttelton Borough Council committee.

The council’s town-plan-ning committee opposed the designation on the road through the built-up area of the borough because it believed it would cause major administration procedures.

The United Council advised that it would consider submissions on section two of its draft regional planning scheme this month.

The main road through Lyttelton Borough from Evans Pass to Rapaki has been designated a minor arterial road in this scheme. The committee decided such a designation could lead to the denial of access to some properties and unnecessary licensing of access.

The council’s administration officer, Mr G. T. Broker, said that all land use alongside a minor arterial road would be subject to access restrictions.

Such a designation would be “administratively difficult” for the Lyttelton coun-

cil. It would mean that the council would lose autonomy in deciding land use adjacent to the road.

The committee recommended that the council be heard in support of its submission.

Dumping fee

The works and reserves committee recommended that the Mount Herbert County Council be charged $BO a week for use of the Lyttelton dump. The Mount Herbert council had sought the use of the dump for the disposal of its weekly rubbish collection.
