Marathon swim relay
PA Wellington New Zealand is likely to host the world’s first multinational marathon swimming relay after the success of the third international between New Zealand and Australia on Cook Strait yesterday. At the end of yesterday’s race, which Australia won in eight hours 58 minutes — just over 12.5 minutes clear of the New Zealanders — the controller, Tony Keenan, said that invitations to other marathon swimming nations to compete across Cook Strait would be issued as soon as possible. The Australian, manager, John Koorey, the Cook Strait individual record holder, said he was sure at least the top six or seven nations would be keen
to compete. “I think other countries would love to have the chance,” he said. “It’s a unique event, pretty challenging and the cold water is also a big thing.”
The race got under way just after 9 a.m. yesterday after a three-day delay, but conditions though sunny, were not ideal.
The Australians took the lead from the start and were never headed to score their third successive win in the event, first held in 1982.
