Sugar supplies could run out

PA Auckland Sugar supplies for the whole of New Zealand could run out in the next few weeks because of an industrial dispute, according to the managing director of the New Zealand Sugar Company, Ltd, Mr Alec Brennan. He said stocks would last less than a month if the Chelsea refinery in Auckland, which employed about 300 people, closed. It would close by the end of the week if the dispute was not settled, he said.

The Arbitration Court yesterday received an application from the company for an urgent hearing on the dispute, but the court’s secretary, Mr John Hall, said the hearing could not be this week or next week.

The dispute is over a claim by three boiler operators for natural-gas payments. The company wants to convert its boilers from oil to gas firing. Mr Brennan said, “We do not see any immediate prospect of a settlement. Technically the boiler operators are on strike. When the oil runs out on Thursday or Friday they must fire the gas. If not, we will suspend them and close. “We do not believe there is justification for any extra payment for firing on gas.”
