Jerseys ruled out

The University of Canterbury senior rugby team is expected to play in its usual jerseys this winter, although it could be sporting something different for the first round on Saturday. The chairman of the C.R.F.U., Mr M. R. Barnett, told the union’s management committee that he had had a discussion with the president of the University club over the new sponsored jerseys that the senior team was planning to wear. The jerseys carry, along the arms, the name of the sponsor.

The club, said Mr Barnett, had been told that the jerseys, under the N.Zft.F.U. rules, were unaccejAble and he was in no

doubt that the club fully understood the position. Asked if this meant that the jerseys would not be worn, Mr Barnett said he was sure they would not be. He said that because last year’s senior jerseys were no longer available the club could have a problem this Saturday and the union had undertaken to make a set available.to the club upon request. Mr B. J. Drake said he was in no doubt that Canterbury had taken the proper action, but it was disconcerting to hear that a major union in another centre was turning a blind eye to the question and letting the local University chib go ahead and wear the spon-

sored jerseys. Following receipt of a letter from the North Canterbury sub-union about “boundary hopping,” the union decided to write to all clubs reminding them of their obligations in regard to registering players from other areas.

North Canterbury claimed that last year 25 players from north of the Waimakariri played for the Belfast club without one dispensation being given. However, some 'members felt that while “boundary hopping” had crept in again since a blitz two or three years ago the traffic between town and country was two way.
