McEwan wins cricket award
Paul McEwan, the outstanding individual in Canterbury’s Shell Trophy-win-ning cricket team this summer, has been chosen as the winner of the D.B. Canterbury "Personality of the Year” award. The selection of McEwan, who has won the award once before, was announced at a dinner, organised by the High School Old Boys club, at the Old Orchard last evening. The judges were the sports editors of “The Press,” Mr R. T. Brittenden, and the “Christchurch Star,” Mr W. T. Mayston. In eight trophy matches for Canterbury McEwan batted 12 times for 713 runs, the leading aggregate in the New Zealand first-class season, at an average of 59.4. Batting, as usual, in an attractive, positive manner, McEwan failed to reach 40 just three times.
His seven senior club matches for Old Collegians
produced 434 runs, at 36.2. The guest speakers at the dinner were the recentlyretired Australian wicketkeeper, Rod Marsh, a former New Zealand medium-pacer, Bob Cunis, and the prominent Canterbury trotting trainer and driver, Derek Jones.
