BALLET WITH GARTER Betwixt the span of modem trends; ups, downs, straights, bends; and the passing marker-buoys of yesterdays, a white wedding is still a pleasant event, and retains a favoured charm. The morning bright, adds easy flair to preplanned bustle, which must precede that gentle walk of dad and daughter from car to portico, and, all serene, forwards through a double fringe of friendly faces, towards the organ-sound and altar. Few knew the drama barely concealed that trod the aisle with tailored grace. The bride, one of an attractiive fourdaughter family, has an ardent traditionalist among the sisters. She, now recovered from a recent voyage to India had returned home with exotic fine fabrics, mystic-beads and such. Having the right ingredients, she decided to fashion a
garter par-excellence, certain to sooth, sober and inflame any first XV groom. As the final minutes flew, before departure for the church, and in spite of a desperate search, the magic garter had gone. In haste, a borrowed larger leg-size was drawn to its envied place. Alas, in those first few metres down the holy precincts, the usurper fell from grace, to barely ankle-high. With dextrous toe-work, unseen beneath her gown, the bride skillfully dribbled it forward to the penalty area, where the maid-of-honour, with telepathic sisterly expertise, performed a combination curtsey and dummy-pass. A happy ending, the tired elastic tucked within a surprised bouquet of what-nots. Perhaps on some far away lonely ledge, a gartered guru sits, stares serene.
