IMF prediction

NZPA-Reuter Washington The International Monetary Fund says the strong growth in industrial country economies may slow somewhat this year, but should still remain relatively brisk into 1985. The IMF, in its semi-annual World Economic Outlook, said some of the economic strength in affluent nations should begin to be felt by the Third World, although there may be something of a lag.

The IMF said on the fourth-quarter-by-fourth-quarter basis, growth in industrial countries would slow from 4.4 per cent in 1983 to 3.3 per cent this year. In 1982, it fell 0.5 per cent. The IMF analysis said part of the reduction in growth was due to economic slowdowns in the United States and Canada where recovery was being adversely impacted by high interest rates.
